Warsaw Challenge 2011

LionHeart 20 Min Mix Reggae Sampler

This is an old project I did for a all genre music project.  I was chosen for the reggae set and was told that every DJ had 20 minutes.  I decided to put a lil blessing at the beginning, some early warm up, & a few big tunes. Here is a dope clip I got from my man Refa - Waset NorthStar Zulus.  Love it.  Check out how the True School handles their biz...  Almost feel sorry for the other cats and I know a few of them...  The Red Bull sponsored event was billed as: "Urban Momentum Dance Week 2003" and brought the world's best dancers together to represent all forms of Urban Dance: B-Boying, Funk Styles, Hip Hop, Capoeira, House, and Abstract Moves.  The "Momentum Contest Format" is totally unique because it gives dancers the freedom to choose their own music allowing dancers of different styles to compete on a level playing field.

In these days were the MC has almost become the black sheep of true Hip Hop culture, it's nice to see a veteran still doing it.  Not just doing it, but doing it right.  Following the blue print and for goodness sakes, actually making sense and sounding coherent.  What a nobble concept right?  Here you go!  Masta Ace for you cats that need to realign your chakras.   If you got a million sentences to spit in one line or have a entire self-agenda/thesis to tell the masses - Get out of the game and become a preacher at your local church, or become a professor at a university.  No one cares.  Only wack cats that don't even follow the Hip Hop culture movement, your blinded friends, and your groupies feel it.  Amen to the Pioneers and Veterans that run this game.  Salute!

Joe Conzo - Hip Hop's original photographer

I've had the pleasure of meeting this great Hip Hop legend and Boricua brother.  The man is as cool as they come. Articulate, genuine, and humble.  For those of you that never heard of him, you probably seen his photos.  They cover a very important part in our Hip Hop culture.  The documentation of the birth of Hip Hop.  One love to you Joe.  Keep smiling my brotha.  Here's a photo slide show of some of his moments captured on film and the man himself kicking off some jewels.  Enjoy!

Also for those of you that have never heard of the man here is a bit of info.  Each one teach one...

Back in the 70s, Joe Conzos pictures were part of Hip-Hop. 30 years later, his pictures are part of Hip-Hop history. Born February 6, 1963 and raised on the tough streets of the South Bronx, Joe was definitely at the right place at the right time. Strapped with a camera 24/7 during the late 70's and early 80's, he intimately captured the birth of Hip-Hop music and a culture that would forever change the world.

Having attended school with some of the pillars of Hip-Hop, such as The Cold Crush Brothers, Joe was never too far from a classic shot. He would go on to be the Crushs exclusive photographer and record some of the most candid and exhilarating moments of the pioneering rap group to date. With the help of True School flyer king Buddy Esquire, those photos and many others would soon grace party flyers and event posters and act as the earliest forms of Hip-Hop marketing and promotion.

In addition to the Cold Crush, he documented other legendary Hip-Hop groups like the Treacherous 3, Fearless 4 and Fantastic 5 in famed venues such as The T-Connection, Harlem World, Ecstasy Garage and The Roxy. Many luminaries, like Kool Moe Dee of the Treacherous 3 and Rahiem of the Furious 5 consider Joe to be one of the first Hip-Hop photographers. But Joes photographic contributions to urban culture werent limited to just Hip-Hop. Being the grandson of the late "Hell Lady of the Bronx" Dr. Evelina Antonetty, Joe also documented the political and socio-economic conditions that played a great role in the late 70s, early 80s South Bronx. Joes dad, Joe Conzo Sr. acted as confidant and historian of late "King of Latin Music" Tito Puente. Joe Sr.s unique position allowed his son exclusive access to some of the most influential names in the world of Latin Music. Salsa greats like Hector Lavoe, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Johnny Pacheco and Ray Baretto were brilliantly shot by Joe as they shaped the face of Latin Music.

As fate would have it, Joes success and popularity would come to a screeching halt, as Joe unfortunately became a product of the harsh environment in which he shot. During a battle with drug addiction and in search of personal and professional growth, Joe would disappear off the photographic radar for nearly 2 decades.

Today, Joe is a 14-year veteran of the New York City Fire Dept., working as an EMT and rediscovering his love for photography. Joes work has appeared on VH1, featured in a highly acclaimed New York Times article and has appeared in publications such as VIBE, The Source, Hip-Hop Connection (Europe), Urban Hitz (Australia), Esquire and Wax Poetics. His work was also featured in the books Hip Hop Immortals, Yes, Yes, Yall and displayed at the prestigious Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York. In addition, Joe and his work are part of a world tour surrounding his highly successful, Born In The Bronx photo retrospective with a book of the same name to follow in 2007. Conzo concedes, Photography has changed so much. No more darkrooms, no more chemicals, nothing but computers and digital cameras. Joe mightve made
way for new technology and advanced hardware, but I guess that aint too bad when youve already made history.

30 Minute Mix - Vol. 84

Been meaning to post up this sure shot from my partner in crime IZZE-WST.  DJ Mane had asked him a while back to rock a cover for one of the upcoming volumes.  IZZE uses these as practice sessions.  Here is a flick of the Architect putting it down with the good old No. 2.  No photo shop here, just a good old sharp pencil and some old markers.  Once the sketch was done, he inked it with a thin black marker.  Then he sat down to try to put down some color and with really no direction came up with this 80's Blackbook feel.  A sure shot for sure, can I hear a witness?  LOL and to think that at one point he thought about just doing it black & white.  With no further delay, here is the track info and the download link.  Enjoy!

ZONE in Los Angeles...

The other week ZONE shot up to LA to link up with WST memeber PESA.  They checked out the MOCA Graffiti/Street Art show billed as the biggest show of it's kind.  While there you know ZONE can't and wont pass up on the opportunity to get down.  With just a few hrs. to rock before he had to head back to SD, he pulled out his paint and did what he does.  Wish I had more photos of the wall but PESA turned winnie that day and went over his entire piece.  Should of know that the bar gets raised when painting with the crew... lol

Shaolin Jazz

Pass the Mic to Hopper

The man: He’s Ryan Hoppe, but everyone calls him Hopper The scene: Hopper loves ’90sera hip-hop, so you can catch him occasionally at U-31 on Thursday nights for the Generations Party with DJs Cros1 and Artistic. But Hopper’s not a DJ, MC or b-boy; he holds up the more behind-thescenes and underground pillar of hip-hop culture—graffiti. Mostly, you can find him hard at work at his business, Serve Design, coming up with graffiti and hip-hop inspired designs for his clothing line and freelance clients.

The Story: Hopper can still remember sitting in the back of his dad’s car as they drove past the infamous 5 Yardboys graffiti crew. He’d watch in awe as artists like Saratoga Sake and Daze painted big, beautiful graffiti murals.

“It just caught my attention, and I knew I wanted to do it,” Hopper says. “As a kid, I’d put on a Smif-N- Wessun CD or something, put my headphones on and just draw—just create and draw.”

That started in the fifth grade. After building up piles of practice sketchbooks and eventually venturing out to do a few hands-on pieces on the streets—he got arrested once when he was still a minor—Hopper found his niche. His work evolved into his current style of bright, big, colorful lettering. One of his murals can be spotted on the Undisputed fitness and training center building in North Park.

“My style is really unique,” Hopper says. “It’s real young and friendly, you know. It’s not real hardcore and dark-looking at all.”

Hopper designed the logo for local hip-hop event producer and DJ Cros1’s first-ever Freestyle Session b-boy battle and has since been asked to do the design work for break-dance events around the world. He was the head designer at Tribal Streetwear for more than a decade before he struck out on his own. His clothing line has become popular among local hip-hop heads.

    So I was laying in the infirmary with a broken foot after taking some small arms fire from some wobble headed snipers when I received the call.  The voice on the other side said: “I know you’re in the infirmary, but we got a mission.  Are you down?”  Got to admit I was getting real board doing nothing in infirmary.  “Ride!  You know, I’m down!  Send the Black Hawk.” I replied.  With that said, one minute I’m getting hospital food and pain medication and the next I’m hobbling around the Black Hawk trying to get all my gear straight.  Parachuting in while trying to land on one leg was not fun.

      Once we arrived at our destination, we were met by allied forces from the TFL squadron.  We also sent in for WST veteran SAKE to help with the festivities.  Once the mission was laid out, everyone took position and we went to work.

      ZONE and I headed first into the bamboo grove followed by TFL special force members STYLE, DRANE, & TAL bringing up the end.  Sake was out on a reconosense mission and was to join us later in the bamboo grove.  The mission was short, sweet, and to the point.  Take care of the objective and get out.  As usual ZONE was mopping up anything in his pass and he continued all day till we grabbed him by the collar and pulled him out.
